This presentation looks at how you might go about showing a sitter’s personality in a portrait and how effective other artists and photographers have been over the years in achieving this. The presentation draws from the author’s own work, the art world and a selection of the photographic ‘masters’ both historical and contemporary.

“This is split into two parts. Part 1 looks at the pictures I like to take. I love looking for patterns and this is a theme throughout the talk. The first half looks at early work, trees, doors and windows, architecture. It includes a few audio visual sequences as that is another aspect of photography that I enjoy considerably.
The second part shows some of the images that helped me progress from EFIAP to EFIAP/bronze. There are a number of before and after images.”

This talk arises from a section of our second circuit of the Planet, this time in the Southern Hemisphere. We always set an objective for each continent, and in the case of South America, we researched the ancient and historic route devised by the Inca civilisation to link their new-found nation from Southern Chile to Columbia (as they are today). The chosen route lies mostly through the upper regions of the Andes, and most importantly, much of it is still there. Google Earth was an enormous help in researching our route!
